LOOSE EQUIPMENT RESTRAINT SYSTEM

My first task while at NASA was to create concepts for Intenal Access Ground Support Equipment (IA GSE.) It consists of floors, walls, lighting, lifting devices, or anything that will help the ground crew complete their work in the belly of the rocket. IA GSE is essentially installed and removed prior to launch and never flies. The part that I was responsible for was called LERS, short for Loose Equipment Restraint System. LERS panels (in yellow) provide a workspace for the personnel to do their work, place their tools, and restrain parts and tools from being lost. Loose items in a rocket can spell disaster. FOD, or Foreign Object Debris can be anything from a loose screw, eyeglasses, a screwdriver, or equipment that gets away. This system will help prevent FOD.
